Paolo Manzo is a photographer based and trained in photography in Naples (Italy) and at “IED” (European Institute of design) in Rome. The desire to know and to tell the Neapolitan suburbs arose over the years of his adolescence when, driving home with his parents, he crossed a peripheral road of the eastern area of Naples and putting his head out of the window of the old Fiat Panda 750 of his father, he stopped to look at a cluster of tall buildings in reinforced concrete, fantasying about how the life of those inhabitants was and wondering if they lived the same difficulties as his family too. From those memories linked to his childhood and from the experiences of his life in the suburbs, was born the desire to document the most difficult areas, such as those of north east and west of Naples. Through his photographies, he has been telling since 2012, the territorial metamorphosis due to the migration of 1980 Irpinia earthquake victims to the peripheral areas of Naples. This long-term project has been published in several national magazines like Vanity fair, La Repubblica, Millennium, and international magazines such as, Stern Crime, Focus Magazine, Edition Gallimard and El Pais with whom he has been collaborating for 5 years. This year he received the Pierre & Alexandra Boulat Award 2023 – 2nd Prize BarTour Photo award 2023.
Paolo Manzo è un fotografo che risiede e si è formato a Napoli (Italia) e allo “IED” (Istituto Europeo di Design) di Roma. Il desiderio di conoscere e raccontare la periferia napoletana nasce negli anni della sua adolescenza quando, tornando a casa con i genitori, attraversa una strada periferica della zona est di Napoli e affacciandosi al finestrino della vecchia Fiat Panda 750 di suo padre, si fermò a guardare un grappolo di alti edifici in cemento armato, fantasticando su come fosse la vita di quegli abitanti e chiedendosi se anche loro vivessero le stesse difficoltà della sua famiglia. Da quei ricordi legati alla sua infanzia e dalle esperienze della sua vita in periferia, nasce il desiderio di documentare le zone più difficili, come quelle del nord est e dell’ovest di Napoli. Attraverso le sue fotografie racconta dal 2012 la metamorfosi territoriale dovuta alla migrazione dei terremotati dell’Irpinia del 1980 verso le zone periferiche di Napoli. Questo progetto a lungo termine è stato pubblicato su diverse riviste nazionali come Vanity Fair, La Repubblica, Millennium e riviste internazionali come Stern Crime, Focus Magazine, Edition Gallimard e El Pais con cui collabora da 5 anni. Quest’anno ha ricevuto il Pierre & Alexandra Boulat Award 2023 – 2° Premio BarTour Photo Award 2023.
